Twenty art museums from the Ruhr Metropolis have grouped together under the umbrella title of RuhrArtMuseums.

They build a unique museum landscape consisting of 20 national and international museums of art featuring works from the 19th century, through the Modern, and all the way to contemporary art. With "Mapping the Regions", RuhrArtMuseums will implement their first joint exhibition project, and with its "Collection Tours" programme it will develop new forms of education and mediaton. From January 29, 2010 the new RuhrArtMuseums website gives further information about the participating museums, the exhibition project and the mediation programme.

European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 now open!

The Ruhr is the European Capital of Culture 2010. The cultural capital year was officially kicked off yesterday at the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site Zeche Zollverein, the region’s main landmark, by German President Horst Köhler with European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and other political heavyweights in attendance. More than 100,000 Ruhr residents braved icy temperatures to celebrate the grand opening until the early morning hours. / MORE

"We are ready to go", says Fritz Pleitgen, Chairman of the RUHR.2010 GmbH, shortly before the start of the European cultural capital year and the Grand Opening of RUHR.2010 on World Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein in Essen, formerly the world’s largest colliery. "The grand opening event will bring our motto to the point: an impressive industrial setting for an artistic and musical tale of change through culture and culture through change, with pop singer Herbert Grönemeyer’s new anthem for the Ruhr as the crowning finale." The dark horse, according to Pleitgen, however, remains the weather. / MORE

Visiting the Metropolis: RUHR.2010 Exhibition in New York

New images breaking the cliché – that’s the objective of the "Mythos Ruhr" (Ruhr Mythologies) exhibition that will be touring the world’s metropolises and has now been opened at the Deutsches Haus in New York City. 22 large-format photographs by Manfred Vollmer, a photographer from Essen, showcase spectacularly illuminated sites of industrial culture in the Ruhr: the Henrichshütte mill in Hattingen, the dark side of the moon at the Oberhausen Gasometer, the Rem Koolhaas staircase at the Ruhr Museum and the gigantic pit lamp on top of Rheinpreussen tip in Moers. \n / MORE

The Henze Project: New Music for a Metropolis

For RUHR.2010 European Capital of Culture, the musical scene of the Ruhr Metropolis has joined forces for an homage to the composer and musical philosopher Hans Werner Henze in a network for New Music. From January to December 2010, more than 40 partners will be presenting Henze’s musical oeuvre and social work from the early days to the present: opera, ballets, symphony concerts, chamber music and radio operas. A film retrospective, an orchestra festival, a symposium and a composition competition will be exploring Henze's achievements and influence. / MORE

European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 introduced in Brussels

Exactly a month ahead of the official kick–off of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 at the World Cultural Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein in Essen, the German Capital of Culture presented itself to the European public in Brussels. The launch event was hosted by the German federal government’s Commissioner for Culture and Media and the Brussels representative office of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
