Hünxe: Local Hero, December 26 - 31, 2010

With its baroque castle complex of Gartrop-Bühl (Hünxe), which also includes a water mill and Blumrath's Restaurant located in the castle park designed by Maximilian Weigel, the extensive parish of Hünxe, idyllically positioned in the Lippetal valley in the Lower Rhine region, boasts a truly beautiful architectural jewel. Since owner Dr. Peter Blumrath purchased the extensive complex in its then somewhat ruinous state at auction, the area has been completely revamped and renovated: the castle has been lovingly refurbished and restored and this prestigious venue has been made available as an attractive site of culture to celebrate the culmination of Cultural Capital Year. / MORE

Local Heroes 52 Weeks - 52 Cities

From the town of Alpen to the ancient Roman camp at Xanten, from Sunday to Saturday, from Dachsberg to the Reinberger Heath - the call has rung out, starting on January 10, 2010: "Behold this town!" The Local Heroes programme is spotlighting every municipality within the Ruhr Metropolis. For one full week one town will be the centre of attention for the European Capital of Culture. The towns and cities will themselves draft the schedule of events for their Local Heroes weeks - presenting a very personal cultural calling card that reflects local traditions, urban challenges and European dimensions. / MORE

The !SINGstation

Functioning as an interactive element and serving as a conceptual link among all the Local Heroes weeks, a specially developed !SINGstation will be passed – like a relay baton – from one Local Hero to the next. The !SINGstation can be used to transmit musical greetings and songs from one town’s residents and visitors to the following Local Heroes towns. In this way, during the 52 weeks which the Capital of Culture spans, a (musical) map for the Ruhr Metropolis will be created, reflecting the cultural variety of the 53 towns in that conurbation. / MORE
