The "Ruhrgebiet Tourismus GmbH & Co. KG (RTG)" was set up on the 29th of April 1998 with the aim of creating a future-orientated destination management to package all the powers in the region and create an efficient mechanism to market its tourist potentials. Since April 2009 the company operates under the name "Ruhr Tourismus GmbH".

In the run-up to the Capital of Culture year it is fulfilling an important and necessary duty to position the region as a new brand-mark for cultural tourism in Europe, and market its cultural attractions to tourists. 

Several very successful projects initiated by RTG encourage people to visit the region. Every year "Extra Shift, the Long Night of Industrial Heritage" attracts an increasing number of visitors to enjoy exceptional cultural events in the impressive settings of former industrial sites. Cyclists are delighted with the new Ruhr Valley cycling trail, the most successful tourist product in the whole of the Ruhr Valley. And the RuhrTOPCard enables its owners to discover the whole of the Ruhr metropolitan area for a whole year at a very reasonable price.

The Ruhr Metropolis Business Development Agency is a central service company and contact partner for all business questions with regard to the Ruhr Metropolis.

It was set up in January 2007 as a company belonging to the Ruhr Regional Association with its headquarters in Mülheim. The managing director is Dieter Funke. The wmr knows the region and its business people, mediates contacts, and provides consultancy services with respect to locations and financial support. It has access to sophisticated consultancy instruments, and a wide range of contacts to existing networks, and advises businesses who are interested in relocating to the region in their search for suitable offices and trading areas.
