In 1834 Franz Haniel became the first in our region to deep-mine bituminous coal – the fuel of heavy industry. It was a breakthrough that heralded the birth of the Ruhr. Thirteen years after his pioneering achievement, Franz Haniel founded the Zollverein mine. Once a centre for mining, today it is a cultural hub, and thus a symbol of the structural change that has swept through the Ruhr.
Haniel was once active in industry. But since then it has, like the region, experienced a transformation – and is now an international trading and services group. Today we have a presence in over 30 countries, employ about 50,000 people, and generate annual sales of almost 30 billion euros. The origin of our success was, and remains to this day, the Ruhr: Haniel’s headquarters have been in Duisburg-Ruhrort since 1756. This is where we are at home. This is where we set the course for our future growth. And it is where the foundations for our worldwide expansion lie.
