The European Capital of Culture celebrations in 2010 provide a perfect framework and a unique opportunity to highlight this relationship. This is why RWE is giving its support to the Capital of Culture as the major sponsor. Our commitment demonstrates our solidarity with the region and its inhabitants.

RWE is placing all its Capital of Culture activities under the headline "Energy Culture Ruhr". The fascinating relationship between energy and culture in the Ruhrgebiet can be seen from a huge number of individual projects. The nucleus of our sponsoring activities is the artistic installation entitled "Ruhr Atoll". Thanks to the support of RWE, and starting in April 2010, up to five art islands will make up a floating "energy park" on Lake Baldeney in Essen. The islands are intended to inspire people to think more about questions concerning power supplies and climate protection. The artistic project will be accompanied by a large number of events which will feature RWE in an intensive dialogue with politicians, academics, children and young people, not forgetting its own staff of course.

That said, the spectrum of RWE Capital of Culture activities is even broader. In our capacity as a European power supplier we also want to create contacts with the two other Capitals of Culture, Istanbul und Pécs. And finally, RWE would not be RWE without the contributions made by its local subsidiary companies to the success of the many self-initiated projects in the Capital of Culture.

RWE is one of the five largest power suppliers in Europe. Our activities include producing, transporting, trading in and marketing electricity and gas. We are also active in the water business on the continent of Europe. This integrated business model means that we are well placed to profit from the growing demand for power. Our 63,500 members of staff provide 20 million customers with electricity and 10 million customers with gas. In the business year 2007 we had a turnover of 42.55 billion €.
