The Ruhr Metropolis has a unique advantage when it comes to being a European Capital of Culture: its potential is greatly underestimated. The outside world generally associated the region with a declining coal and steel industries and greatly damaged landscape. Only rarely is it thought of as a centre of culture. The Ruhr Metropolis has more culture on offer within its relatively small geographical area than any other region in Europe: 120 theatres, 100 concert halls, 200 museums and over 1,000 industrial monuments, many of which have become attractive cultural sites.

The focus of the international Media Relations is to communicate the motto of RUHR.2010 „Change through Culture – Culture through Change“ in an international context.  We would like to refute the cliché that the Ruhr region is dominated by blast – furnaces and smoking chimneys.  The former coal- and steel region successfully transformed itself into a new Metropolis. RUHR.2010 creates inspiring events and developments with a long - ranging impact.

Therefore, international journalists said about the Ruhr Metropolis that it is "Europe’s most exciting new cultural destination" (TimeOut Magazin London) and "Essen shaking off its grimy image" (Bangkok Post). Almost 1,100 international journalists get press information regularly.
