The Culture Canal

The towns along the canal, with the city of Herne acting as a driving force, are planning a high-class, multifaceted program of culture in 2010 with a different theme every month. The project will be developed in close association with all the other projects on the Emscher Island. The “Culture Canal” will be accessible to visitors along a number of different trails. These include the network of cycling trails along the whole length of the canal and – of particular importance – the many different forms of water transportation. From now until 2010 the towns are cooperating with the waterways authority in a plan to build permanent landing quays for pleasure boats, thereby connecting the different towns with a regular passenger boat service. The “Culture Canal” will improve the tourist infrastructure of the Rhine-Herne canal and, at the same time create a leisure and culture area for the benefit of local inhabitants and tourists alike.
