Ruhr-Atoll
Whatever else may happen on the oceans of the world, 2010 will sharpen your appetite for the sea. The Ruhr Atoll is a largescale temporary art installation on manmade islands on Lake Baldeney in the south of Essen and on the River Ruhr in Essen’s oldest suburb, Werden.
The curator’s idea follows the formula: “Art is Energy – Energy is Movement”, and invites scientists and artists to take their inspiration from the prescribed themes. Renewable sources of energy, including biomass, hydraulic power, wind, sun and creativity are being used for the floating “power park” that is being created on the lake. The artistically designed islands are intended to give us pause for thought and observation, and encourage us to linger awhile. The islands, each of which will be between 100 and 150 square metres in size, will create a symbiosis of Art and Energy. They will bring transparency into artistic and scientific creative processes, thereby making them more easy for visitors to grasp.
