Renowned institutions like the NRW Design Centre, the red dot design museum on the site of the Zollverein pit, not forgetting the Department of design at the Folkwang Academy, are all setting worldwide standards. Design is one of the strengths of the Ruhr Metropolis and this will be built up even further with “RuhrDesign.2010”.

For over 15 years the arts and crafts branch in Bochum has been promoted by a range of different activities. Above all the FORMART fairs entitled “design under a hundred”, and ARTVENT regard themselves as platforms for presenting and marketing independently produced one-off goods and small series as alternatives to mass industrial products. Under the programmatic title, “DESIGNKIOSK RUHR.2010 – Arts & Craftsin the Ruhr”, the “Verein BochumDesign e.V.” has initiated a project intended to lead to a sustainable development strategy for the arts and crafts branch.
The “Verein BochumDesign e.V.” will be documenting the economic and cultural significance of the branch in the Ruhr by means of a dialogue and exhibition project, and showing development strategies over the activities to date in the Ruhr, spreading out into a European context.
The Bochum Design Prize will be organising a European design competition and an exhibition project in 2010. Designers will be invited from all the towns in the Ruhr Metropolis and their European partner towns. Around 30 participants will be selected by a European jury for the Bochum Design Prize. Each of the designers will be given a specially selected kiosk in order to present their collection. The kiosks will be artistically designed and transformed into DESIGNKIOSKS, whilst retaining their original shape and sales function. The DESIGN-KIOSKS will be organised in the form of a trail to an overall exhibition in the Ruhr. DESIGNKIOSK is one of 80 projects selected by a jury for a major cultural capital project with European partners entitled TWINS.
