Similar to RuhrPop.2010, RuhrJazz.2010 is pursuing the aim of networking the large amount of jazz activities in the Ruhr Metropolis in a structural and sustainable manner.

Jazz in the Ruhr metropolis is a landscape with prominent high spots (clubs and festivals), almost complete deserts, and a few tender blossoms peeping through the asphalt. For this reason it is not easy to get an overview. “Jazzatlas Ruhr“ provides help in the form of a collection of texts, sounds, and images that tries to give some order to the jazz scene and to illustrate its structures. In over 20 chapters – local, regional and national – the project author, Michael Rüsenberg, presents the main jazz venues in a lively and palpable manner including more than two dozen interview partners who can be heard extensively in this multimedia project.

“jazzwerkruhr plays Europe” aims to enrich, enliven and dynamise the jazz scene in the Ruhr Metropolis on a long-term basis by setting up cooperative networks between regions in the whole of Europe. When music initiatives, musician collectives, festivals and venues work together over a long period of time this can only be of benefit to music programmes, artists and artistic diversity throughout the whole region. “jazzwerkruhr plays Europe” will be deliberately supporting the live music scene with new impulses. Plans are afoot to arrange an international jazz conference, on the occasion of the ECHO Jazz awards, with jazzwerkruhr’s European partners, including representatives from the other Capitals of Culture in 2010, Istanbul (Turkey) and Pécs (Hungary) and the European Capital of Culture 2011, Tallinn (Estonia).

Current jazz and improvised music in the Ruhr Metropolis comprises a huge number of creative persons, grassroots initiatives, festivals and venues. “Jazz Whispers”, an artistic and networking project, will be a musical game with regional players and international guests. Just like the children’s game “Chinese Whispers”, where messages are whispered from ear to ear and changed, intentionally or unintentionally, in the course of the game, “Jazz Whispers” will be passing on musical messages throughout the Ruhr Metropolis. These might be melodies, rhythms, fragments, complete compositions or music mixed with visual or performing arts. Whatever the case, they will be passed on, expanded and interpreted in a huge number of different ways in the course of a range of events and concerts. The musical journey of discovery through the Ruhr begins in May 2010 in Moers and ends in November 2010 with a festival in Dortmund. They will be a huge number of further venues, concepts and surprise events in between.
