Night Figures

Illuminations, songs, literature - the new metropolitan area will be turning night into day. Night-time projects in 2010 will give visitors little time to sleep. For anyone asleep at night will be missing out on the action.

“Extra Shift. The Long Night of Industrial Heritage” was first presented in 2000 to demonstrate the huge and colourful variety of culture in the decentralised Ruhr Metropolis.

Since then the all-night regional festivities have been presented in over 40 venues in 20 towns and cities, in an inimitable format unique to the area. In order to ensure that people can move around the area with ease, the public transport authority puts on extra services including a special shuttle bus service to carry guests between the various venues. “Extra Shift” presents the changing face of the Ruhr in a brash self-confident manner. Industrial Heritage venues, disused sites, undiscovered locations and mysterious places in the process of transformation are taken over and used in a theatrical manner. For years now “Extra Shift” has been the living embodiment of the philosophy of the growing networked metropolitan area.
