concrete playground is a series of events on street art and streetwear organized jointly by streetwear today/untitled documents and Heimatdesign.
Taking place in the cities of Dortmund, Bochum and Essen, concrete playground will feature not just a range of street art exhibitions but also live shows, discussion panels and workshops that feature some of the dynamic scene's key actors. For six months, Essen's Zollverein will become both a centre of communications and an archive with, among other things, a pop-up gallery presenting pioneers and up-and-comers of the international street art scene in a series of exhibitions.
In Bochum, concrete playground will take over the whole city with vacant lots being transformed into exhibition spaces for three weeks. A special highlight: the exzenterhaus building, one of Europe's most exciting contemporary architectural projects, will become a showcase for VJs and urban screenings for a week.
Streetlab, Amsterdam's platform for street culture, will bring young fashion designers, DJs and street artists from the Netherlands to Dortmund where they will meet young creatives from the Ruhr. Regional and international artists will join forces to turn parts of the Westfalenpark into a melting pot during the Juicy Beats Festival.
Street art - youth culture
Street art is a phenomenon of the late 20th and early 21st century. Some of the artists have rises to international fame, like Banksy from England and the American Shepard Fairey whose poster Hope even played a role in the US presidential campaign.
Street art, which is at times critical of modern society, nowadays has become part of the fabric of a metropolis. At the same time, it can be seen in mainstream galleries, a development that’s being hotly debated within the scene.
Tied to other subcultures like breakdancing, skateboarding and BMX biking, street art is both singular and undeniably shaping other creative areas.
