The Ruhr Metropolis' annual cultural event series ExtraShift is inviting all of Europe to celebrate its tenth anniversary. Visitors to the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 will be able to experience the character and fascination of the Ruhr region.
For one night, current and former industrial sites will become the impressive backdrop for spectacular productions by regional and international artists. Around 40 venues will offer individual programs between 18:00 and 02:00 while visitors undertake their personal voyages of discovery from site to site.
All locations will be connected by a shuttle bus system specially set up for the night. ExtraShift tickets provide free entry to all sites as well as free bus fare. Around 150,000 people participate every year.
Ever since the first ExtraShift ten years ago, the series has staged events at locations that symbolize the transformation of the Ruhr metropolis. Street theatre, music, art, dance, artistry and light art will all take place at former mines and stockpiles, inside steel factories and production sites. The Night of Culture impressively uses mighty industrial monuments as backdrops, letting furnaces, gasometers and other treasures of industrial heritage appear in a new light.
It's the combination of the performances with the backdrops that makes the night of culture such a special event. The productions reflect the character of the locations which are inevitably part of the artistic experience because of their uniqueness. With its cross-regional approach, ExtraShift has been a forerunner of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 for years.
