The emphasis of Encounters Day organised by Rhineland Regional Council (LVR) is on getting both able-bodied and disabled people to enjoy themselves and take pleasure in each other’s company.
The LVR has been inviting the region's citizens to this great integrational festival since 1998. As part of RUHR.2010, "Encounters Day" is to take place this time in Essen's Grugapark. The festival will offer forums and platforms for information, for encounters of both a casual and structured kind, and for finding common sources of joy, participation and celebration.
The festival is thus laying down a marker with guests, exhibitors, associations, clubs and citizens’ initiatives being encouraged to join forces to drive integration and the full social participation of people with disabilities.
Numerous themed facilities and attractions will be available to stimulate all the senses: visitors will be invited to step into a "Dark World" in order to learn how people "see" with their hands; or to experience how body language and sensed vibrations can replace the spoken word.
People with physical disabilities, people whose senses are impaired, the mentally challenged and those without disabilities will all be able to make their mark on the day.
