The European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 kicks off on 9 January 2010 with an official ceremony and a major cultural festival at the Zollverein world heritage site in Essen. The event is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors. German national TV broadcaster ZDF will, on the evening before, also be dedicating a major TV prologue to the European Capital of Culture.
On 8 January 2010 at 22:45, Germany’s TV audience will be provided with a one-hour show with celebrities from the world of art and culture. The Ruhr Metropolis will be putting on a colourful show offering a full range of items from the traditional to the modern, from cliché to reality, and from football to opera.
The programme will be recorded on the day of broadcast before a live audience in the "Musiktheater im Revier" in Gelsenkirchen. Among those invited will be the RUHR.2010 officials from the Ruhr cities, as well as other partners, helpers and volunteers who, through their efforts, have supported and continue to support European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 - and without whom none of this would have been possible. There will also be tickets available for sale to the general public.
Also on 8 January 2010, the Christian churches will be holding an ecumenical service in Essen cathedral. The service will be led by the bishops of Münster and Essen, the Archbishop of Paderborn, the Praesides of the Protestant Churches of Rheinland and Westphalia, the Orthodox Metropolitan and a representative of the Community of Christian Churches. At around 18:45, during the service, the bells in the 53 towns and cities of the Ruhr Metropolis will be rung as a sign of welcome, greeting the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010.
