contemporary art ruhr (C.A.R.)
The innovative art fair at the Zollverein world heritage site
"contemporary art ruhr" (C.A.R.) is an innovative and dynamic fair format with two events per year at the Zollverein World Heritage Site: the media art fair in the summer and an exhibition of contemporary art in the autumn. In conjunction with the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010, C.A.R. is being expanded into an international art event.
In 2010, C.A.R. will occupy an area of over 8,000 square metres in no less than six halls, an international art exhibition with the long-term goal of developing an art market that the Ruhr can call its own. Fair. Minimalist. Inspiring. The high-calibre, curated art fair will be attended by fifty to sixty private galleries concerned with contemporary art, renowned museums, academies, public art galleries and selected artists.
Since 1997, the event has been attended by people from all over Germany and an increasing number of international visitors. Participants include established and recently-opened commercial galleries for contemporary art, acclaimed museums, academies, public art galleries and art societies. Selected artists are provided with a small area of subsidised floor space, giving them the opportunity to attend a prestigious art fair, while projects by art-school students are also on display.
In parallel to the fair there are special exhibitions, happenings, VIP events, symposia, the C.A.R. Gallery, an open competition for photography and digital art, not to mention the "open photo days". For those interested in the world of art, C.A.R. offers an insight into the current art market at the cutting edge of a dynamic industry.
