The European Film Awards annually celebrate the excellence and diversity of European cinema. Presented in 15 categories, the awards are voted for by the members of the European Film Academy, some 2,000 European filmmakers.

On the occasion of the European Capital of Culture 2010 - Essen for the RUHR, this year's 22nd European Film Awards will take place in Germany's Ruhr area, a metropolitan region with 53 cities and around 10 million people right in the heart of Europe. The weekend programme will include two spectacular venues of historical dimension: Germany's largest movie theatre, the Lichtburg in Essen, and the legendary Century Hall (Jahrhunderthalle), former gas power station of Bochum's steel mills - where the heart of the industrial culture once beat. On Friday, 11 December, nominees, EFA Members, invited guests and film fans from the region will gather at the Lichtburg (founded in 1928) for a European Film Academy - European Film Fest RUHR gala event.

Among the 1,400 guests for the glamorous Awards Ceremony at Bochum's Jahrhunderthalle on Saturday, 12 December, will be film stars from across Europe, winners and nominees, members of the European Film Academy, and the European film industry. One of the highlights of the evening will be the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award - which went to British acting legend Dame Judi Dench last year.

The European Film Academy (EFA) was founded in 1988 upon an intitiative by Swedish director Ingmar Bergman in Berlin and its aim is the promotion of European film culture. The EFA's activities include conferences, seminars, and master classes on all aspects of filmmaking and annually culminate in the presentation of the European Film Awards, by now broadcast in over 40 countries.
