As the leading everyday cultural medium, television has also always acted as a mirror for the Ruhr. The "TV: Tour of the Ruhr" television festival showcases productions that have won Grimme Awards during past decades.

And it talks about them: in podium discussions involving those responsible for the productions, together with critics, politicians, culture experts, economists, workers, bosses and, not least, people from the Ruhr - those who were witnesses many years ago, and those who today represent the inimitable melting pot that is the Ruhr. They will all air their views - for instance about films relating to the world of work such as “Rote Erde” (Red Earth) and sport, i.e. "Im Westen ging die Sonne auf - Kleine Geschichten um Kohle und Fußball" (The Sun Rose in the West - Tales of Coal and Football). Topics such as the home, everyday life and personal life stories can also be explored via the medium of television. Here examples include "Knapp-Familie" (The Knapp Family), "Abnehmen in Essen" (Losing Weight in Essen) and "Lebens-Geschichte des Bergarbeiters Alfons S." (The Life Story of Miner Alfons S). Narrative entertainment too has a role: from Schimanski thrillers to Adolf Winkelmann’s "Jede Menge Kohle" (Piles of Coal).

As highlight events, ARTE/WDR and ZDF will première current perspectives of the Ruhr from young film-makers. "TV: Tour of the Ruhr" will thus spotlight the significance of the Ruhr Metropolis as a birthplace of and central player in German (television) culture.
