The music industry makes a significant contribution to the creative industry in combating structural change in the Ruhr Metropolis. Indeed, the region boasts an expressive and diverse popular music culture with huge potential. The declared goal of the “Ruhr Music Commission” (RMC) is to showcase this culture of pop regionally, nationally and internationally and to strengthen it through specific measures.

In summer 2009, the RMC set up an office in the Creative.Quarter at the former Prinz Regent colliery. The Commission’s 20 founding members include well-known representatives from all key areas of the industry. A quick run-down of initial funding measures reveals the broad spectrum of activities. They range from the production of a sampler of Ruhr newcomers and a showcase evening in Dortmund in cooperation with the national music magazine "Visions" through the selection and presentation of the first commissioned act ("FRIDA"), which supported "Polarkreis 18" at the Ruhr Festival, to the production of a Ruhr.Music.Summer Festival Guide detailing over 40 outdoor festivals which, between May and September each year, get more than three million visitors to the Ruhr Metropolis swaying their hips to rock and jazz.

In addition, structural support measures for the regional club scene, as well as partnerships and networking with other national and international associations, are all at the planning stage.
