"grubenklang.reloaded" reflects space and time through the medium of contemporary jazz. The primary project collaborator is the internationally active composer Georg Graewe who comes originally from Bochum. Dortmund in the east and Moers in the west mark the anchor points of this networking project for the Capital of Culture RUHR.2010. The theme is the construction of spatial and artistic bridges in the region and beyond.

"grubenklang.reloaded" harks back to the remarkable artistic traits of contemporary jazz. It follows the standards set at the beginning of the 1980s in Bochum by the "GrubenKlangOrchester", which was founded by pianist and composer Georg Graewe. Domestic and international musicians, including many of the most important contemporary soloists, were assembled in this ensemble and for a decade it shaped the innovative sound of the Ruhr. International guest performances, radio productions and recordings carried the sound of the region out into the world.

Today the creative, musical threads and attitudes are being newly interpreted as bridges between past and future, between tradition and modernity. Georg Graewe, who now lives mainly outside Germany, will manage the project as Artistic Director as well as taking an active part as composer and performing musician.

In addition to concerts by the reformed "GrubenKlangOrchester", including at the MOERS Festival and monthly performances in the Dortmund domicil, there will be further special projects. Georg Graewe's video cantata "alle kennen meine visage" (Everyone knows my face), based on the diary entries of Albert Einstein, will be presented in the "Bochum Stanzwerk". This work had its première during the Einstein Year at the Jewish Museum in Berlin. The Berlin director, actor and author Manfred Karge will organise an evening in the Bochum Schauspielhaus theatre that revisits the close collaboration between Karge and the "GrubenKlangOrchester" during the directorship of Claus Peymann.

The restored version of Karl Grune's 1923 silent film "Schlagende Wetter" (Trapped in the Mine) with a newly composed score will have its première in the Hattinger Henrichshütte industrial museum. These events will be supplemented by chamber music recitals from regional ensembles and soloists with musicians from New Orleans, Vancouver, Amsterdam, Chicago and New York in the Zeche Carl in Essen and other venues. The more intimate series of concert events at the Bochum Napp bookstore juxtapose literature and music as companions and contrasts.
