There is a strong and lively pop culture in the Ruhr Metropolis. In addition to the more widely celebrated "high culture" calendar, music happenings and pop festivals are also to be promoted internationally. Together with representatives of the music industry, RUHR.2010 has initiated the "Ruhr Music Commission" (RMC) in order to create new networks, attract artists to the Ruhr Metropolis and open up markets.

Part of the brief of the RMC office is to optimally link up the 20 or so professional music festivals in the Ruhr Metropolis using vehicles and instruments such as combined advertising campaigns, presentations and business ventures, as well as joint marketing initiatives at national and international congresses, trade fairs and festivals.

Number one on this "structural support" agenda is the active promotion of bands - the "Commission Acts" project. The Ruhr Music Commission will be the central point of contact for festivals and creative businesses, providing support in all relevant issues, from communication with regulatory authorities to information about EU subsidy projects. This creative nucleus around the former Prinz Regent colliery in Bochum with the "ByteFM/Ruhr" radio station and the "Ruhr Pop Foundation" will generate far-reaching synergies.

The boundaries with other branches of the creative economy will be kept deliberately fuzzy, and cross-fertilisation with the games segment, film festivals and fashion will be actively pursued.

A film documentary is to be shot as a further means of disseminating the prevalence of pop culture in the Ruhr Metropolis and publicising it in the media.
