Once a year the Lichtburg cinema in Essen becomes a paradise for gamers. This is where the German Developer Awards are presented to creators of outstanding games for PCs or consoles.

These popular awards were presented for the first time in December 2003 in the former Essen "MudiaArt" discotheque. Since 2005 the Developer Awards ceremony has had a permanent base in Germany's largest and most famous première cinema, the Lichtburg. It has established itself as a permanent fixture on the German games industry calendar.

The commercial success of a game is not the sole criterion for winning a German Developer Award. The key factors are: exciting new gaming ideas, technical innovation, interface excellence and game-playing quality. The cultural dimension also plays an extremely important role in the judging process.

The recipient of the main German Developer Award is decided upon by the public and the "Academy of the German Developer Awards", which has a membership of 250 professionals from the German games industry.
In addition, an expert jury also presents special awards to selected developers in more than 20 categories, e.g. the Honorary Prize of the German Developer Awards.

The prize-giving ceremony for the 2009 German Developer Awards will be taking place on 9 December, again in the Lichtburg before an audience of more than 1,000 invited guests.
