The "Living Games Festival" is the first cultural festival in Europe devoted entirely to computer and video games. All major aspects of the extraordinary virtual world of digital games are presented to and discussed with the German general public.

Following its successful launch in June 2008, the Festival is now planned as a regular event. Its aims are to allow gamers, parents, teachers and creative artists to discover how games are created and to discuss the many creative aspects of the gaming genre.

Further themes are the social aspects of games and - most importantly - child protection. Computer and video games are now a long-established part of the culture industry. The "Living Games Festival" in the Ruhr Metropolis is a platform on which a long-overdue cultural and social exchange of ideas regarding the medium of "games" can take place. Moreover, it is a stage that is making the Ruhr Metropolis nationally famous as a games location.

There are also plans for the creation of a platform for all young games developers in 2010 to give them an opportunity to demonstrate their skills, present their projects to a wide audience and forge important contacts. Visitors will be able to meet the entire spectrum of creative artists involved in production within the entertainment software industry, including game authors, composers, game and level designers, concept artists and interface designers.
The winner of the Independent Games Award was decided upon by the general public for the first time in 2009. And Dieter Gorny, Artistic Director for the Creative Industry at RUHR.2010, is chairman of the jury that will decide on the winner of the "Living Games Festival Award (Gold) 2010".
