During the 2010 season, the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen will be devoted to the dramatist and publicist Heinrich von Kleist. Under the banner of "Continent Kleist in the Romantic Sea", the events will examine what significance the author holds for us today - aesthetically, morally and socio-politically. Heinrich von Kleist is the most European of classic German authors.

An outsider caught between Weimar classicism and Romanticism in Germany, he found a new intellectual home on a trip to Paris during the French Enlightenment. Long after his death, it was this that ensured his acclaim throughout Europe.
