"Der Faust" - Presentation of the German Theatre Prize
The German Theatre Prize "Der Faust" is to be awarded for the fifth time. Following Essen in 2006, Munich in 2007, Stuttgart in 2008 and Mainz in 2009, in 2010 the TV station ZDFtheaterkanal will again act as partner to the event, broadcasting the prize ceremony live from Essen. The prize will thus return to the city where it was first awarded five years ago.
"Der Faust" is a national award, albeit without any prize money, that is designed to draw attention to broad diversity of the theatrical world. It is presented to those artists whose work is considered to have pioneering potential as regards German theatre. The "Faust" organising bodies are the German Theatre Society, the Cultural Foundation of the Federal States and the German Academy of Performing Arts.
All theatres are entitled to make nominations. The prize-winners are selected by members of the Academy of Performing Arts from a shortlist of three nominees in each case. Those winning awards will be announced on the evening of the official prize ceremony in Essen. The German Theatre Prize "Der Faust" is awarded in the following categories: Director - Drama, Achievement in Acting, Director - Musicals, Singer - Musicals, Choreography, Achievement in Dance, Director - Children and Young People's Theatre, Costume/Stage Design. A lifetime achievement prize is also presented. In 2009 it was awarded posthumously to one of the outstanding figures of modern theatrical dance, choreographer Pina Bausch, whose ensemble Tanztheater Wuppertal enjoyed global acclaim.
