FAVOURITES 2010 Drama Festival - 25 years of Theaterzwang NRW
The FAVOURITES Drama Festival will celebrate its 25th anniversary in Dortmund from 28 October to 6 November 2010 under the artistic direction of Aenne Quiñones. Founded in 1985 under the name of "Theaterzwang" (Drama Compulsion), it views itself as a forum for outstanding productions originating from the alternative scene in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Offering the most prize money of any German off-scene event, the festival has always promoted alternative theatre in NRW and supports artists involved in independent artistic developments.
Once again in 2010, the biennial drama festival will focus on ten to twelve productions selected by a panel to take part in the competition. A jury will award prizes to the best productions. And, for the second time, a "wild card" will be presented during the festival. It is awarded for an artistic work that offers exceptional and innovative theatrical perspectives. The first prize-winner was director Laurent Chétouane with his "Dance#1: Pictorial Description of Heiner Müller".
The performance network that ties in with the festival supports organisers and ensembles in planning and realising guest performances. This means that the prize-winning productions are also performed at other venues in North Rhine-Westphalia, across Germany and internationally. For instance, the 2008 prize-winners were assisted in organising tours to cities including Glasgow, Zurich and Istanbul.

To celebrate this work, RUHR.2010 and garajistanbul, a performing arts company for contemporary drama, have set up an exchange. European choreographer and director Michael Laub, who has been producing portraits for the stage since 2002, has selected the leading actresses from 200 applicants and developed the framework for 17 solo parts.
