Theater der Welt 2010
"Theater der Welt" (Theatre of the World) is the most important international festival for the performing arts in Germany. It takes place every three years, each time in a different German city. It confronts its audience with the diversity of theatre cultures and presents pioneering developments in the areas of theatre, dance, performance, media art and the visual arts.
With the "Theater der Welt 2010" the Ruhr offers a unique platform for global issues relating to art, politics and identity in its year as European Capital of Culture. From June 30 to July 17, 2010, artists from all over the world will be invited to Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr to present their personal views and visions of the countries and continents in which they live.
"Theater der Welt 2010" extends the horizon of the Ruhr Metropolis towards Western and Eastern Europe, to the Near and Middle East, and towards Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania. The festival focuses on the contemporary as a common language between cultures that opens up a space for experiencing unfamiliar local situations.
The "Schöne Aussicht" (Beautiful Outlook) programme previews various festival artists and ideas with a regular series of events in partner venues from November 2009. Public discussions will be initiated in various formats that deal with the same issues and questions as the Festival itself. "Theater der Welt" invites the public on a world tour, on a tour through time and space in Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr - "Schöne Aussicht" is the preparation for this world tour.
In Frie Leysen from Belgium, the Festival has for the first time appointed an international director. In 1992 she initiated the multidisciplinary kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels, which she directed for over ten years and developed into one of the most influential festivals in Europe.
