The world's first modern metropolis will be showcased in a special exhibition at the Museum Folkwang from October 2, 2010, to January 30, 2011 - Pictures of a Metropolis: The Impressionists in Paris.

Around 80 paintings by famous impressionists like Manet, Pissaro, Monet and Degas and some of their contemporaries such as Caillebotte, Luce and De Nittis as well as the work of about 80 photographers from the era will be on display and provide a unique look at the city.

The artists - who lived and worked in the French capital between 1865 and 1900 - show a big city undergoing rapid change. At the same time, Paris itself was also becoming an important subject for artists: A metropolis in which new boulevards and squares were built and the rhythm of life was increasingly shaped by train stations and the metro subway while the Eiffel Tower rose and industrial sites sprung up on the city’s periphery.

The exhibition - which features many works on loan from Paris' Musée d'Orsay - is set up to resemble a walk through Paris. It starts with a view of the city and then meanders along the new streets, parks and cafes to the quais, trains and metro stations all the way to the suburbs and back again - into the theatres, bars and the circus of the city at night.

The Museum Folkwang is realizing this special exhibition in partnership with E.ON Ruhrgas.
