He was an author, a sailor, a world traveller and an unusual photographer: Heinrich Hauser. His photographic journey Black District, created on a 6,000-kilometre journey through the region in 1929, provided readers with fascinating observations and impressive images from an area known by few people at the time.

Hauser's photographic portrait is, besides Albert Renger-Patzsch's Ruhr Landscapes, one of the early photographic masterpieces on the Ruhr region and shows Hauser as a representative of the "new watchers" that have inspired generations of photographers.

As part of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010, the Ruhr Museum will show Hauser's works at the Gallery Kohlenwäsche at Zeche Zollverein, pit XII, in an architectural setting that was created at the same time Hauser composed his travelogues - thereby providing interesting reference points.

The exhibition will be shown at the same time as the retrospective The new Ruhr and thus provides intriguing counterpoints to the recent and contemporary Ruhr.
