Crisis or everyday life

Idleness, bumming around, unemployment, crisis or everyday life? For some Europeans, having spare time is pure luxury while for others it simply signifies a “lack of work”. What do people really do when they’re not working?

How does the meaning of "doing nothing" differ between different European countries? Does the definition of the term "work" need to be re-evaluated in today's world? Does "time" mean something different in this era of economic crisis and collapsing markets? "Time isn’t money but life" - isn't that what it's really all about?

Dortmund's artscenico club is pursuing these questions with a photo safari on "hanging around". The organization hopes for lots of participants from the Ruhr metropolis and its European partner cities.

Anyone interested can take part, no matter whether they're professional or amateur photographers. Submitted photos will be published online, with a selection shown in an exhibition.

Authors, dancers and actors, visual artists and filmmakers are invited to use these photos as a trigger for works of their own. Texts, videos, performances and installations thus inspired will be shown in the Ruhr metropolis in 2010.
