Lots of outstanding photographers have come out of the Ruhr's colleges and universities. Examining the specific issues and contrasts of the region with its city planning, landscaping, work and recreation areas, poses a special challenge to many photographers. Many photographs addressing this challenge have been incorporated into Pixelproject_Ruhr, a digital photo collection that currently puts 286 high-quality photo series by 178 photographers online.
Pixelproject_Ruhr is conceived as a visual memory of the region. At the same time it's a network for those photographers who have a close relationship with the Ruhr metropolis. These include professors, journalists and amateurs as well as the winners of international photography prizes and such renowned photographers as Joachim Brohm, Leonard Freed, Duane Michals and Anton Stankowski.
The exhibition shows some of the project's photo series, particularly those that portray the region's transformation - from the time "underground", dominated by mining and heavy industry, to the new metropolis developing today "topside". By zooming in on subjects and processes that one might say were determined seismographically, they also anticipate future trends and developments so that the present already offers glimpses of the future.
