liquid area

The liquid area project defines water as a focus for the artistic mapping of the Ruhr metropolis. The area between Ruhr and Emscher has been shaped by water in many forms, be it as rivers, channels, ditches, storage basin or - on a cultural level - as drinking water, coolant, discharge or recreation area.

Eight exhibitions display the works of artists whose works deal with the places, context, functions and meaning of water. Paul Baartmans, Helmut Dick, Luka Fineisen, Axel Friedrich, Erich Füllgrabe, Thomas Gerhards, Rainer Gottemeier, Christian Hasucha, Harald Hilscher, Kirsten Kaiser, Gereon Krebber, Susanne Kutter, Matthias Schamp, Dirk Schlichting, Claudia Schmacke and Ike Vogt have all developed individual artistic experiences with different focal points.

The artistic interpretations create a space that raises perceptions which in turn are a reflection of the Ruhr metropolis. In this manner the art work represents an artistic, subjective and fragmentary mapping of the region. This "map" not only makes things that might be hidden in everyday life visible, it also identifies the Ruhr metropolis as a space in which art is examined - as a liquid area.
