Mapping the Region
The exhibitions in the RuhrArtMuseums

Cartography and mapping have been playing a role in the arts since the 1950s. In contemporary art, "mapping" is a core research method used by many of the artists represented in exhibitions at the RuhrArtMuseums.

Mapping was initially defined as a cartographic approach to a research subject. It stood for capturing the networks of a space. In this sense it can be described as an instrument used to "read" landscapes and places. Cities and landscapes are topographical and geographical as well as semiotic spaces, meaning they are shaped by history, society, identity and networks of relationships. Hence a region like the Ruhr can be captured cartographically and read in different ways - just take a look at an atlas of the region versus a map of the regional transport network.
