From Islamic to contemporary art
The exhibition is designed to visualize the influences and impact of international Islamic cultures on the Ruhr metropolis.
Finnish artist Tuomo Manninen will portray 10 to 15 Ruhr families in their familiar surroundings. All of them have roots in Islamic countries but see themselves as Ruhr residents now. Through showing their examples, the cities of the Ruhr will be combined in a collective force field.
In addition, the works of contemporary artists from the countries where the portrayed families originally came from will be exhibited and an international connection defined by art will be created. The portrayed Ruhr residents indirectly present aspects of the current art scene in Islamic countries.
Countries of origin were selected in advance in accordance with the relative importance of their art scenes.
The following countries were chosen, along with the potential artists:
• Algeria: Kader Attila
• Bosnia-Herzegovina: Nebosja Seric Shoba
• Egypt: Maha Maamon
• Indonesia: Arahmaiani
• Iran: Arash Hanaei
• Lebanon: Lara Baladi
• Morocco: Mounir Fatmi
• Pakistan: Rashid Rana
• Turkey: Özlem Günyol & Mustafa Kunt
• United Arab Emirates: Tarek El Ghoussein
So-called historic islands - historic cultural and art exhibits - will reveal temporal and spatial continuities between these different cultures.
