World views: Landscape in art from the 17th to the 21st century
Representations of landscape stand out among the different art forms as they are uniquely able to illustrate the role of man in the world - because showing a view of a landscape inevitably also demonstrates a world view.
Landscape art combines individual and collective perspectives. It reflects, sometimes even foresees, social and attitude changes. In some cases it creates a counterpoint to the status quo.
The changes, disruptions and upheavals reflected by this type of world view are the focus of this exhibition. Its goal is not to show a one-dimensional linear development "from paradise to catastrophe". However, it is evident that in the 20th and 21st century, views of landscapes can only be credible if they reflect the experience of catastrophe.
Such a disillusioned view shines a new light on the developments of eras past and opens up fresh perspectives. In a region like the Ruhr where industrialization has recklessly used and dramatically altered landscapes, an artistic reflection on them can only be explosive, particularly in times of structural change.
