In 2010, the Oberhausen Literature Prize, first awarded in 1999, will be extended internationally and presented as the "LIT.AWARD RUHR" under the artistic direction of Michael Dilly.

As from June 2009, authors from the regions surrounding the Ruhr's twin cities - Middlesbrough (Tees Valley, United Kingdom), Mersin (Çukurova, Turkey) and Carbonia (Sulcis, Italy) - have, for the first time, been asked to write short stories on the topic of LIGHT YEARS - or IŞIK YILLARI and ANNI LUCE respectively - as have writers from the Ruhr.

The compelling questions, the initiators believe, will be: where are there similarities; where are there differences? The perspectives of others enrich one's own, and literature is the very best vehicle achieving this effect. Writers, established and otherwise, have until 10 January 2010 to submit their entries locally in their native language.

Local judging panels will select the three best stories, which will then be translated into English. A panel of four comprising representatives from the four regions will subsequently examine the twelve short-listed stories and select three winners. A total of 14,000 Euros in prize money is up for grabs.
