This year, the Polyphony concert in Duisburg's Mercatorhalle was an official part of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 programme and the culmination of a three-year exploration that led to the discovery of musical treasures performed by talented singers from all over the world - from Spain to Korea, from the Cap Verde Islands to Greece.

Besides their passion for music, the gifted amateurs had two things in common: they all have made the Ruhr area their new home, and they belong to the older generation.

As every year, the line-up included 15 talented singers from Rotterdam who participate in the Dutch partner festival "Euro+". "Euro+" provided for the inspiration for "Polyphony", and the Dutch Consulate General has supported this German-Dutch collaboration since 2008.

The soloists and vocal ensembles were accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra of the Duisburg Philharmonic and top-class musicians from the jazz and world music scene. As in 2008 and 2009, the Artistic Director was musician and composer Bojan Vuletic, who enthralled the audience with an outstanding concert programme.

The stage set was designed by the artists Danica Dakic and Egbert Trogemann. A video installation provided a visual background to Vuletic's musical concept, while film portraits of the singers performing during the event explored cultural diversity and each individual artist. The Mercatorhalle’s formal ambience was transformed into a sea of polyphony.
