Manuscript "musica enchiriadis" / Loan of the city of Düsseldorf to the Düsseldorf State and University Library

It is a compelling testimony to how deeply embedded the cultural roots of the Ruhr actually are and how strong the influence of the Essen-Werden Monastery Church once was. A series of priceless manuscripts from the Werden Scriptorium, including the "musica enchiriadis", bears witness to this artistic and intellectual might. The "musica enchiriadis" manuscript dates from the year 900 and contains the earliest references to polyphonic music in the Western world.

Known as the "Düsseldorf Fragment", it is now located in the Düsseldorf State and University Library. In 2010, the document will be on display in the Essen Cathedral Treasury, and will inspire an interdisciplinary programme of events including concerts and conferences. Musicologists, theologians, historians and psychologists will reveal how the works performed reflect transitions in spiritual thinking and at the same time serve to herald new developments.
