Zeitinsel Fazıl Say
"You have to listen to this guy, he plays like the devil." It was with these words that composer Aribert Reimann drew the attention of piano professor David Levine to a musician of exceptional talent. Reimann was talking about Fazιl Say, composer, pianist, jazzman and exponent of world music.
Through his music, Say effortlessly bridges the gap between East and West, beguiling audiences in concert halls the world over with his extrovert piano-playing - from his home city of Ankara to New York. Since the 2006/07 season, Say has had an exclusive artistic contract with DORTMUND CONCERT HALL. At the end of Say's period of residence in 2010, the concert hall will be dedicating a "Zeitinsel" (Time-Island) to the multi-talented musician.
From March, 10 to 13, 2010, the world première of his work "Istanbul Symphony" and the German première of his violin concerto "1001 Nights in the Harem" will feature in a series of concerts performed by the WDR Symphony Orchestra of Cologne. Say will also give a recital and star in a "Fazιl Say & Friends" concert featuring musicians and DJs from Istanbul, jazz artists and classical musicians.
