Haus Ruhrnatur: Climate and Renewable Energies
The ecological station Haus Ruhrnatur is a house of learning and experimentation set up by the RWW Rheinisch-Westfälische Wasserwerksgesellschaft mbH in 1992. Visitors can experience the Ruhr's ecological system up close, with live animals and interactive stations.
In 2010, the location's permanent exhibition will be expanded by a section on "Climate and Renewable Energies". The RWW Rheinisch-Westfälische Wasserwerksgesellschaft mbH wants to provide more in-depth knowledge about solar and wind energy and use of water. While the Haus Ruhrnatur's focus up to now was on preventive water protection, sustainable energy use will be spotlighted in the future as well. The exhibition's new section lets children, youth and adults experiment and research on current issues.
The Earth's climate history and current climate
A huge virtual globe shows how the Earth's climate has changed over millions of years: 400 million years ago what is now the city of Mülheim was located near the Equator while the area was covered by ice 200,000 years ago. A big turning wheel will provide answers to questions about today's climate change.
The Earth's energy
The Earth's energy supplies will be compared to the amount of energy we use.
Energy usage in nature and technology
Animals and plants use energy efficiently and in an environmentally sound manner. What can we learn from nature?
Renewable energies
Visitors can explore how sunlight helps polar bears stay warm, powers an engine or generates electricity. They can also build and test wind turbines and play with different water wheels and turbines in a pool of water.
Children and youth will be given a special Explorer's Passport that guides them through the exhibition. Different types of events will provide background information on topics relating to climate and energy.
