Organised by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, an international competition for schoolchildren under the slogan of "Encounters with Eastern Europe" is to be launched in 2010. The topic will be: "Pathways of Convergence in Europe". Pathways are links. They enable borders to be crossed and new contacts to be established. In recent years in particular, pathways hitherto inaccessible have now been reopened.

To mark the cultural capital year, the current competition will be extended to include the topic "RUHR.2010 - European Capital of Culture". Submitted projects must embrace the different facets of the Ruhr Metropolis: the region's history and cultural diversity, its artistic achievements or its culinary specialities while also considering the links between Eastern European and the Ruhr. There will be no limits to the imagination or creative scope that may be applied!

The competition is open to all students aged 25 and under who attend schools in NRW from primary upwards (general-education, vocational and special-needs schools, and education colleges). Schoolchildren and young people at Eastern European schools who receive tuition in German are particularly encouraged to take part.

Individual and team projects may be entered, as may collaborative projects developed by schoolchildren from NRW and Eastern Europe. Students from other German states and other countries may also work on team projects. The best projects will receive prizes of up to € 300.

Deadline for Submissions: Janurary 31, 2010
