Global Young Faculty

The Global Young Faculty is the workplace of around 100 upcoming scientists from the Ruhr Metropolis plus a body of respected academics from Germany and abroad, all of whom are seeking to address the current and future challenges facing our globalised world.
Initiated by the Stiftung Mercator (Mercator Foundation) and coordinated by the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen, the Global Young Faculty represents the contribution of these two institutions, the Ruhr Metropolis University Alliance and independent research centres to the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010.
The goal of the Global Young Faculty is to network the next generation of scientists in the region, to present their answers to key issues of the future and to give them the opportunity to collaborate with fellow experts in international networks. Additional support for the initiative is provided by the Minister for Innovation, Science, Research and Technology of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The Global Young Faculty is an interdisciplinary forum that unites research and social responsibility and promotes discussion of key questions relating to the future. The researchers will work on central issues in the areas of climate, technology, the economy, health, culture and society, and will also be provided with funds for workshops and conferences designed to facilitate research partnerships.
The culmination and closing event of the Global Young Faculty will be a congress entitled "Our Common Future", which will take place in Hannover and Essen in November 2 to 6, 2010. The event will be organised jointly with VolkswagenStiftung, Deutsche Messe and Stiftung Mercator in cooperation with the City of Hannover and RUHR.2010. It will resume the debates on pivotal issues of the future that were first defined during EXPO 2000 in Hannover.
