Scientific organisations in the Ruhr region organised a joint Summer Academy to mark the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 year. During the week-long event, students, researchers and artists from the Ruhr discussed the position and importance of the Ruhr region in Europe from a broad-based, interdisciplinary perspective.
The Summer Academy explored the historical and present-day links between Europe and the Ruhr, seeking to ascertain what significance these links have for the future of the region as a European metropolis.
The programme included high-profile inaugural and closing events attended by acclaimed personalities, while the discussion itself focused on the following topic areas: City/Region/Metropolis, Migration/Education, Art/Culture and Medicine/Technology. The objective was to analyse key European facets of the Ruhr while reflecting on the RUHR.2010 project. The Summer Academy also aimed to explore interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral collaboration within the region and the beneficial effects this has on increasing knowledge. The event findings will be documented and published.
