X-Circus Ruhr:
The Tempest
Shakespeare meets skateboarding. William Shakespeare's "The Tempest", a dramatic tale of magic and mythological figures in five acts, is set to roll, jump and fly on an urban stage set in Unna's Kurpark (Spa Gardens). The majority of the ensemble will be literally "picked up off the street" - from the pedestrian zone, the steps of the City Hall and church squares.
Moving from road tarmac to the sawdust of the big ring, BMXers, skateboarders, roller-bladers and street-dancers from the Ruhr Metropolis and its twin towns will present their stunts, tricks and grinds in a circus tent equipped specifically for the purpose.
Together with students from the Travados Circus School and professional acrobats associated with the school, the young street performers - who, in any case, consider themselves exponents of art rather than sport - will defy the laws of gravity with their circus-style interpretation of the classic drama. The daredevil urban artists will show off their breathtaking tricks to audiences over a series of ten performances. Although Shakespeare's powerful verse falls largely by the wayside, this high-speed production of "The Tempest" promises to be an enthralling kaleidoscope of lights, music and choreography that will amaze and astound.
