Ruhr Art Trail
Art, nature and technology in interactive dialogue
The RuhrtalRadweg (Ruhr Valley Cycle Trail) is to be turned into an amazing exhibition extending from Winterberg in the Sauerland region at the source of the River Ruhr, right through to Duisburg where the Ruhr enters the Rhine. The trail’s attraction lies in the different natural, industrial and cultural landscapes on view along the way. Those travelling its full 230 kilometres will regularly encounter witnesses of energy utility RWE: power stations, electricity and gas distribution buildings, pylons and posts marking the route of underground cables.
In the summer of 2010, around 20 of these technical landmarks will undergo a visual transformation: gas stations will take on the guise of moss-covered hills and pylons will become brightly coloured beacons. Sixty young art and design students from Münster Academy of the Arts, Folkwang University, the Independent Academy of Fine Art in Essen and Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts had previously submitted entries for an ideas competition organised by RWE AG.
Of these, the jury selected ten concepts for implementation. Now, along the Ruhr Valley Cycle Trail, art is to become a permanent feature providing a conceptual bridge between nature and technology. Unusual takes on the subject of "energy" serve to change our perception. And cyclists and hikers alike will find themselves slowing down, stopping, looking and gazing in amazement.
