This exhibition and multi-event project with works from the various penitentiaries of NRW provides an insight into a creative world "behind bars" that would otherwise remain locked away and out of sight. The prison inmates, their artistic potential and their creative skills and talents take centre stage in this initiative.

As in Plato's Cave Allegory, visitors are guided through various "shadow worlds". Projections, objets d'art, images, voices, noises, texts, light installations and performance elements create spaces of experience which may inspire with their images of freedom and care-free effortlessness or, with unexpected revelations and confrontations, may well disturb. Step by step, aspects and fragments of the life stories of real individuals, both perpetrators and victims, become apparent behind the exhibits.

"Shadow Culture" is exemplary in the way it places the penal system at the centre of a changing cultural concept. The project includes a café and concerts, film series, readings, presentations and art events. Conferences organised by the Catholic Academy "Die Wolfsburg", Mülheim, and the "Villigst" conference centre in Schwerte analyse through the vehicle of culture the political and social aspects that relate to prison reform and changes in the penal system.
