Square of the European Promise
Everyone is invited to contribute to Jochen Gerz's work of art. The only pre-condition: making a promise to Europe. The names of those who make a promise will be engraved in the square’s 25 stone plates.
It's a vision based on an idea by renowned artist Jochen Gerz. The goal: to motivate people from different nationalities to make an anonymous and highly personal promise to themselves and to Europe. These promises that be sealed by engraving the names of those making the promises onto the square. More than 10,000 people have already committed themselves in this way to a peaceful Europe. That number shall grow substantially during the year of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010.
The art work's first stone plate, by the way, is placed inside, as part of the floor of a church that has been hosting a memorial for the victims of World War I for 75 years. The enemies of then have since become friends.
Participation in the project is free of charge and also possible via the Internet.
