Licht RUHR.2010
Black as coal? Hardly! The Ruhr Metropolis is regarded nowadays as one of the most impressive light landscapes in Europe.
Aside from the Centre for International Light Art in Unna, the world’s first museum dedicated solely to light art (with works by Olafur Eliasson, Christian Boltanski, James Turrell and Keith Sonnier i.a.), permanent works of light art on public view are attracting people from all around the world. Examples include the spectacular illuminations known as "Monochromatic red and blue" by Speirs and Major at the Zollverein coking plant, Dan Flavin’s work in the Rheinelbe science park, the "Yellow Marker" in Bönen and Kamp-Lintfort, both by Mischa Kuball, the light show by Jonathan Park in Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park, the "Oval Lights" in Herne, the "Fraktal" by Jürgen LitFischer on the Tetrahedron in Bottrop and the installation dubbed "no agreement today, no agreement tomorrow" by Andreas M. Kaufmann in Bergkamen.
The Ruhr is lit bright and, with the internet platform "Licht RUHR.2010" also has its first "explorers’ map" showing not only the permanent installations but also the more temporary art events and light shows available. An especially convened committee has the responsibility of selecting, on the basis of clear criteria, both permanent and temporary works of light for the platform. All these installations can be located on the basis of geographic criteria or by the name of their artists or designers.
The major light art highlights in the year of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 have also been incorporated within their own category, and under the heading "News", you will find all the latest information on the light shows and events taking place in 2010.
