Beneath the Open Sky!
Picnic 2010: Cultural experiences in the Emscher Landscape Park
Spread out your picnic blanket in the most unusual places! Ruhr Metropolis residents and visitors are invited to a unique series of experiences: the project entitled "Beneath the Open Sky. Picnic 2010: Cultural experiences in the Emscher Landscape Park" features over 50 events, performances and tours held in the Emscher Landscape Park, Europe's largest regional park.
Events will take place from 16 May to 2 October 2010 at around 30 locations in the Emscher Landscape Park - from the Emscherblick tip in Bottrop and its impressive Tetrahedron through the Hansa Coking Plant in Dortmund with its enchanting industrial nature and the West Park at Bochum's Hall of the Century to the North Duisburg Landscape Park.
During an "ArtPicnic of the Century" in Herne's Mont Cenis Park in August, picnic-goers can eat cavemen and astronauts from their plates while trees whisper secret messages and stones play music. In October an "Underwater ArtPicnic" at the Hansa Coking Plant in Dortmund will include a colourful "fish lounge" with music and wondrous creatures swimming along the conveyor bridge. So how did the sushi get into the coke oven? During the summer, "SunsetPicnics" present the perfect opportunity to chill out and dance to the best in electronic music at the top of the spoil tip. The family-friendly "ExperiencePicnics", meanwhile, promise plenty to do and entertainment for all. Guided tours will reveal how creativity and landscape art shape this urban cultural landscape. Art fans and lovers of nature and the great outdoors can picnic in both the traditional style and more innovatively: with a rucksack and sandwiches or with a picnic basket and antipasti.
The green heart of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 is a vibrant showcase revealing how a former industrial region is evolving into a forward-looking urban cultural landscape with the interplay of art and landscape architecture.
