It's a spectacular addition to the MKM Museum Küppersmühle of Modern Art: The radical yet simple solution of Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron is a cube placed on top of the old warehouse with 22 rooms and about 2,000 square metres of exhibition space.
Herzog & de Meuron - who had transformed the former Küppersmühle into a Museum of Modern Art in the 1990s - will contrast the historic brick architecture of the old building with a structure of an extremely different nature.
The architects' approach is radical yet simple: a light and translucent-seeming cube will be placed on top of the Küppersmühle's warehouse building. Parts of the monumental structure seemingly float 36 metres above the ground. A second, exterior, façade surrounds the transparent inner structure whose windows provide glances in- and outside. The highly visible structure is sure to become a new landmark of the Duisburg skyline.
The new expansion will finally make it possible to fully show the Ströher Collection, the MKM's extensive collection of post-War German art in a spectacular and inspiring context. Around twice as many pieces of art as now will be able to be put on display (currently only 100 to 120 exhibits can be shown in 15 rooms). Visitors can travel through 60 years of the Federal Republic of Germany's art history. One goal of the expansion is to establish a centre for German art post-1945.
